Driving test booking rules: what learners need to know

Before you book a practical driving test, check the current rules on GOV.UK. You need a valid provisional driving licence and usually a theory test pass. The theory pass is valid for two years, so you must pass the practical test before it expires.

Driving test booking rules: who books?

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change or cancel their own car driving test. Another person may help while the learner is present, but the learner must complete the booking steps themselves. Use the official book a driving test service service. Amanda can still help you discuss readiness and suitable timing.

DVSA releases a new week of car test appointments at 6am each Monday, usually for tests around 24 weeks ahead. Earlier appointments may appear at any time if a test is changed or cancelled. There is no waiting list at most test centres, though a few centres may offer an on-hold option. Since 12 May 2026, unofficial appointment scanners and cancellation finder services are not allowed.

Changing or cancelling a test

Since 31 March 2026, you can make only two changes to a car test booking. Since 9 June 2026, a test can be moved only to the original test centre or one of its three nearest centres. Cancel at least 10 full working days before the test for a full refund. Check the current GOV.UK rules before changing a booking.

If you need another attempt after an unsuccessful test, check the current GOV.UK rebooking guidance for the earliest date you can book. Use the feedback from the test to plan what to practise next.

Check before you pay

Use GOV.UK to check eligibility, availability, current fees and booking details. Avoid websites that offer to find or sell appointments; use the official service and keep your booking confirmation.

Before confirming, check that the date and test centre work for you, and keep your booking confirmation and reference details.
