What to expect on test day: your practical driving test
Knowing what happens on driving test day can take away some of the uncertainty. The examiner is checking whether you can drive safely and independently, not whether you can perform every moment without a small mistake.
Driving test day: before the drive
Arrive with your UK driving licence and any other documents listed in your booking information. If you have a theory test pass certificate, take it with you. Check the current documents and test requirements before the day; missing required documents can mean the test cannot go ahead.
At the test centre, the examiner will introduce themselves and ask whether you want your instructor to sit in the back. Your instructor can also observe the test if you prefer. You can ask for the examiner to repeat an instruction if you did not hear or understand it.
The main parts of the test
The practical test includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving and one reversing exercise. During the drive, you will follow directions and complete a section of independent driving, usually by following a sat nav or traffic signs. The test lasts about 35 minutes of driving. You will not be asked to drive on a motorway.
The examiner may ask you to do a manoeuvre such as reversing into a parking space, parallel parking or pulling up on the right and reversing. You may also be asked a “show me” question while driving. Listen to the instruction, take a moment to understand it and continue to give priority to safe driving.
If you take a wrong turn, that alone is not a fault. The examiner will redirect you. Your focus should stay on the road and on making safe decisions rather than trying to guess what the examiner is thinking.
How the result is decided
You can pass with up to 15 driving faults, provided there are no serious or dangerous faults. A serious or dangerous fault means you do not pass that attempt. The examiner will explain the result and give feedback at the end. You can read the official car driving test overview and assessment guidance.
Make a simple plan for the day
Confirm the time and location, arrange how you will get there, and check what car will be used. Try to eat and drink as you normally would, and allow enough time to arrive without rushing. If you have a question about preparing for test day, ask Amanda during a lesson.

Talk through your next step
If you would like to discuss lessons before or after your test, contact Amanda. You can also read the FAQ, view lesson options and ask about fees, or use the contact page to send an enquiry.
