Feeling nervous about driving lessons is common, especially if you are learning for the first time or returning after a difficult experience. You do not have to hide that feeling or arrive completely confident. Letting your instructor know what is on your mind can help you agree a sensible start.

Nervous about driving lessons: say what helps

You could explain what makes you nervous, such as traffic, making a mistake, not knowing what will happen or feeling rushed. You do not need to give a long explanation. It can be helpful to ask for instructions one at a time, a brief outline before starting, or a moment to pause and talk something through.

Your first lesson can focus on understanding the car, the route and how instructions work. You may start somewhere quieter if the conditions allow. A lesson should still include safe, useful practice, but there is no need to try to cover every skill at once.

Build confidence through practice

Confidence often grows from understanding what to do and having a chance to repeat it. After a new skill, ask questions and review what went well as well as what you would like to practise again. If a particular exercise feels difficult, your instructor can help break it into smaller steps.

Being nervous does not mean you cannot learn to drive. It also does not mean that every lesson will feel easy. Progress can vary from one day to another, and a calm conversation about the next step can keep practice manageable. If you feel overwhelmed during a lesson, say so when it is safe to do so.
