Your first automatic driving lesson: what to expect
A first automatic driving lesson is mainly about getting comfortable and understanding how the lesson will work. You do not need to arrive knowing how to drive. Your instructor will explain the plan, answer questions and help you settle in before you move off.
Your first automatic driving lesson: getting started
At the start, you can talk about your experience, what you hope to learn and anything that would help you feel comfortable. Your instructor will explain the car’s controls and the basics of an automatic, including the selector, brake and accelerator. You will have time to adjust the seat and mirrors and ask questions.
The first drive will depend on your experience and the conditions. Some learners begin with a quiet road or a suitable practice area; others may already have experience and want to build on it. You will be guided through simple actions such as moving away, stopping, steering and checking around you. The aim is to learn safely, not to cover everything in one lesson.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are available in 1 hour 30 minute or 2 hour sessions. A longer session can allow more time for practice and review, while a shorter one may suit your schedule. Lesson fees are not listed on the website; contact Amanda to ask about current fees and availability.
If you need collection, include your pick-up postcode when you enquire so Amanda can confirm whether it is within the area covered. Weekday availability is listed on the contact form, and other times may be available by arrangement.
What should I bring?
Bring your provisional driving licence and wear comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to meet the eyesight requirement, bring or wear them. You can ask in advance if you are unsure what to expect.
It is normal to feel unsure at the beginning. Tell your instructor if you need a question repeated or would like a moment to think. The lesson can be adjusted to your starting point and built up as you gain experience.
