Returning to driving after a long break

Returning to driving after a long break can feel unfamiliar, even if you were once a regular driver. You may remember more than you expect, while still needing time to refresh road awareness, vehicle control or confidence. Start by working out what has changed and what you want to do next.

Returning to driving after a long break: check first

Make sure your driving licence is current and that you are legally entitled to drive. If you plan to practise in your own car, check that the vehicle is taxed, insured for your use and roadworthy. If you are unsure about a health or eyesight requirement, use the official GOV.UK guidance on driving with a medical condition or contact DVLA for advice.

Think about the situations you want to feel more comfortable with: perhaps town traffic, roundabouts, parking, night driving or a regular route. You do not have to tackle everything at once.

Build back up gradually

A refresher lesson can give you a chance to talk through your experience and practise in a calm, structured way. You could begin on familiar or quieter roads and add more demanding situations as you feel ready. If something feels rusty, explain that clearly so time can be spent on the right skills.

A long break does not automatically mean that you need to start from the beginning. Equally, it is sensible to check current road rules and give yourself enough practice before relying on a car for daily journeys. If you have not driven for years, take extra care with changes to road layouts, vehicle technology and local traffic conditions.

Choose a realistic first goal

Set a small goal for each session, such as becoming comfortable with the controls or practising a particular type of junction. After the drive, note what felt manageable and what you would like to revisit. This gives you a clear next step without turning the experience into a pass-or-fail test.
